I have talked to many people in the past couple weeks who are thinking of taking voice lessons, I love talking to people who are in this step. I think these voice consultations are the most interesting conversations that I have all week. These potential students know they want to take voice lessons, but they haven’t quite taken the leap yet.
Storytime: One very sweet woman who has a very beautiful voice came to me this week and said “I just want to sing a couple of things for you so that you can tell me if I’m good enough to take voice lessons. If I’m not good enough, just please tell me and I won’t be upset”.
I said, “Of course, let me hear you.” So we did a couple warmups. She has a beautiful voice! Of course, we can help her.
The wonderful thing about singing is that there’s always room for improvement. That’s why I still see a voice teacher twice a month because there are always things to work on in singing. Additionally, a second set of ears is so important for singers since we don’t hear the same thing everyone else hears while we sing.
There seems to be a certain expectation for singers that they have to be at a certain level before even taking a lesson. So let me put a scenario in front of you. You go to a store and you rent a clarinet. You have never played clarinet before. What would you do next? Your first step would probably be to try and find a teacher. When you found someone you most likely would not hesitate to tell them that you are a total beginner and go from there. This seems like the order of events right? At any point of this process would you expect yourself to magically be able to play this instrument??
Just because our instrument is in our body doesn’t mean that we should automatically be able to play! We have to be willing to put ourselves out there enough to take voice lessons- no matter our level or where we are in our singing journey! The voice is an instrument just like anything else– piano, clarinet, cello, harp. Everyone thinks that you’re already supposed to be able to sing–for example: you should be able to match pitch, you should just know how to read music– when all of these things are learned skills. And yes, by the way, matching pitch IS a learned skill. So if you are one of those people who are like, “you know what, I really love to sing, but I can’t carry a tune.” That’s a learned skill. Learning to match pitch as an adult is very possible. We can teach you to do that!
One of my current students was a total beginner and signed herself up for an ear training class at a well known university. She had no experience singing at all, and signed herself up for an online course. How brave is that! She came to me, she’s like, “Lauren, I need your help.” She did. She could not match pitch. So I’ve been working with her for 3 months 2-3 times a week, And guess what? She can match pitch now. It’s amazing. She got an A on her last assignment. It’s pretty exciting stuff.
No matter what level you’re at, you can take voice lessons. If you can’t match pitch yet, that’s okay. You can take voice lessons. If you can sing but you don’t know how to read music. That’s okay. You can take voice lessons. If you used to sing in high school and haven’t since, come take voice lessons! Everyone has a different story and that’s the lovely and wonderful thing about singing. It is never too late to learn how to sing!
I also have two new teachers in my studio who are taking new students . Dr. Kyle Yampiro is a wonderful teacher who has a specialization in vocal health. So if you’re a guy who’s been searching for a male voice teacher, enter your info in below and we can get you I’ll get you in a trial lesson with Kyle. He’s amazing. Zoe is my other new teacher and really great as well. She is super kind, nurturing, and an amazing singer and teacher herself. She’s getting a bunch of amazing reviews.
